A global shortage of engine oil base components is emerging following an Iranian missile strike on one of the world’s largest sources of lubricant base oil and the continued disruption to traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. The Independent Lubricants Manufacturers Association has described the situation as a “global base oil supply crisis,” with Asian markets already seeing tripled fuel oil prices and supply tightening expected to persist until mid-2027 at the earliest.

Overdrive’s Alex Lockie reports that while diesel engine oils used by heavy truck operators may be less immediately exposed than passenger car oils, the supply disruption carries downstream implications for fleet maintenance costs, parts availability, and procurement planning across the trucking sector.
